Understanding Why a Website is Blocked

If you're seeing a blocked page, it means your school has chosen to block this website using Securly Filter. Schools filter the internet to keep students safe online and comply with federal laws, such as the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA), which requires blocking inappropriate or harmful content.

Common Reasons a Page Might Be Blocked

  • It falls into a blocked category (like games, social media, violence, or adult content).
  • It’s a new website that hasn’t been reviewed yet and is being blocked as a precaution.
  • The site was miscategorized, and your school’s filter is set to block that type.

If you believe a page was blocked in error, you can reach out to your teacher or school IT team—they manage the allowed and blocked sites.

For Admins: How to Check Why a Site Was Blocked

Websites are categorized (e.g., Pornography, Drugs, Gambling, Social Media, Hate, Games, etc.) and blocked according to your configured policies in the Policy Editor.

Steps to Identify Why a Site Was Blocked

  1. Log in to Securly Filter.
  2. Navigate to the Activities page.
  3. Locate the blocked event and click the info icon.

You will see the policy that triggered the block, along with the category the site falls under.

You can also check the block page displayed on the user's device for more detailed information.
