Understanding Monitoring Capabilities in Securly Classroom
Overview
Securly Classroom offers robust monitoring capabilities, but it's important for teachers and administrators to understand the limitations and functionalities when managing student activities, particularly when multiple applications or desktops are involved.
Active vs. Inactive Tabs
When students are using multiple tabs or browsers within Google Chrome, Securly Classroom will display only the active tab in the active window to teachers. However, all other open tabs will still appear in the student's browsing history and tab list. Teachers can utilize the following features for better oversight:
Tabs List: All open tabs will be visible in the tabs list, providing a quick overview of student activity.
Browsing History: Teachers can also view the complete browsing history to see what sites students have accessed.
Upcoming Feature: Notification for Non-Active URLs
We are excited to announce a forthcoming feature that will alert teachers when students access specific URLs that are not monitorable (i.e., those starting with "chrome://"). This will include pages like the Media Viewer, Files App, Camera App, Chromebook Settings, and Chrome Shell. Teachers will receive notifications indicating when students are engaged with these URLs, enhancing classroom oversight.
Maximizing Active Windows
To ensure student focus and limit distractions, teachers have the option to force students' active browser tabs to maximize. This setting can help prevent students from keeping inactive windows off to the side. Here's how to enable this feature:
Log in to Securly Classroom.
Navigate to My Account.
Find the option labeled "Force Maximize Active Windows" and toggle it to active.
This feature is often enabled by default but can be adjusted based on individual classroom needs.
Best Practices for Teachers
To manage split-screen scenarios or students watching videos in non-active tabs, consider these best practices:
Refer to Active Tabs: Regularly remind students that teachers can see their active tab and urge them to stay engaged with the current lesson.
Maximize Windows: Utilize the force maximize feature to keep students focused on the lesson.
Involve Students: Encourage students to ask questions if they are tempted to use non-educational resources during class.
FAQs
What happens if a student opens multiple Chrome windows?
Regardless of how many windows a student has open, the teacher will always see the active tab in the active window. All other tabs remain available in the tabs list.
Can teachers monitor apps outside the Chrome environment?
No, Securly Classroom is designed primarily for monitoring activities within the Chrome browser. Activities performed outside of Chrome are not visible to teachers.
By understanding these functionalities and utilizing the available features effectively, educators can create a more engaging and focused classroom environment.
